Overview
On the league spreadsheet, one column indicates roster status. Each player will have one of four statuses: 25-Man, 40-Man, Paid Minor Leagues, or Unpaid Minor Leagues.
25-Man: Players on the 25-man roster are available to be started and accumulate stats. See the below section on Major League Roster for more detailed information on this roster.
40-Man: This roster includes all players from the 25-man roster and up to 15 more. Players on the 40-man roster are protected from being drafted in the Rule 5 draft. All players on the 40-man roster will have a contract assigned to them and, hence, will count against their team's salary cap. GMs may use an option year in order to move a player back and forth, at will, between the 25-man and 40-man roster. To remove a player from the 40-man roster, a GM must either waive or DFA the player and have no other team claim the player. If a player clears waiver or is allowed to be designated for assignment, the player is then to be considered a Paid Minor Leaguer.
Paid Minor Leagues: Paid Minor Leaguers have been removed from their team's 40-man roster but still retain their contract and count against their team's salary cap.
Unpaid Minor Leagues: Players on the 200-man minor league roster are available to be called up to the 25-man or 40-man roster.
Major League Rosters
Each team must maintain an active 25-man roster. An individual player is considered active if they are on a MLB-25 man roster (i.e., not on the disabled list or in the minors). It is expected that various reasons may prevent a GM from being able to have 25 active players. GMs should at all times attempt to field as complete a roster as possible, especially their 23 starting slots to improve chances of winning weekly matchups. To have an active roster, GMs must satisfy both of the following conditions:
(1) Have a player fill each of the following positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, SPx4, RPx5. These 17 positions must be filled at all times.
(2) Have 20 players on their 25-man roster.
Teams who routinely fail to have an active roster may be assessed fines or asked to leave the league.
Scoring will be conducted through Fantrax, where all 30 teams play in one giant league.
Rosters will be maintained by the commissioner's office. GMs can use their individual team threads in each category to post transactions.
There will be 25 roster slots, which will include two bench slots (bench slots can be occupied by any player). These slots are:
C,1B,2B,3B,SS,CI,MI,OF,OF,OF,OF,UT
SP,SP,SP,SP,SP,RP,RP,RP,RP,RP,RP
BE,BE
Scoring categories will be:
Offensive: OBP, SLG, HR, SB, TB (Total Bases), and RC (Runs Created)
Pitching: FIP, WHIP, QS, SV, HD, K%
Unless otherwise specified, we will use Fantrax scoring settings. This includes their position eligibility rules:
Games needed from previous season for a player to qualify at a hitting position : 20
Games needed from current season for a player to qualify at a hitting position: 10
Starts needed from previous season for a player to qualify as a starter : 5
Starts needed from current season for a player to qualify as a starter : 5
Relief appearances needed from previous season for a player to qualify as a reliever : 8
Relief appearances needed from current season for a player to qualify as a reliever: 5
I believe these are the same rules that ESPN uses (they are just more clearly stated). The only difference is if a player does not qualify for any positions based on the above selections, he will qualify at the position(s) played most in the previous season. If he did not play at all last season, then the default position(s) will be used. If you find that Fantrax does not make a player you own eligible at a certain position that ESPN does message me and I will manually add the position eligibility to that player.
Minor League Rosters
Additionally, each team will be allowed a 200-man roster of minor league players. The unpaid minor leaguers will not have a contract assigned to them and, therefore, will not cost the team anything to have on a roster.
Initial Season
Each team will be able to draft 45 minor leaguers in the initial minor league draft, and can add up to 35 more from their home organization that were not drafted in the initial auction.
- You are not allowed to pick up minor league players like free agents. After the initial draft, there will be four methods by which players can be added to your minor league roster:
a) Minor League free agent draft (This will also include any minor league player not currently on any roster of a team)
b) Via mid-season trade with another GM of either league.
c) Amateur draft
d) International Signings
