A's GM (Justin - Commissioner) and Rockies GM (Jeff Bridich) like this
Post by Royals GM (Ryan) on Nov 23, 2015 5:20:22 GMT
Hey Guys! Got some free time and felt like some discussion on how the league is shaping up so far. Some things have become clear in the early goings and the rest of the drafts will be fun to watch.
Some teams loading up early, Others waiting patiently:
Early on in the inaugural auction, it has become clear who wants to fill their roster up and who is willing to wait for just the guys that they want.
New York Mets: The Mets already have 24 men on their roster from the auction. Out of less than 250 total players sold. The roster is almost full and plenty of cap space abounds for the 40-Man roster, but at this time I wonder what the ceiling of this team is. Very few studs fill the roster (Todd Frazier and Carlos Gonzalez), limiting the total upside, and many of the productive role players appear older and potentially nearing ends of their successful playing time (Aybar, Markakis, Alexei, Kazmir, Holland, Benoit). With cap space left, I could see the Mets chase one more stud, and will be interested to see how they approach the rookie draft, with a roster full of aging vets on the 25-man.
Cincinnati Reds: The Mets have 24 players won already. The Reds have 21. However, this roster appears better constructed both in terms of floor and ceiling. Studs are much more prevalent (but it shows in the available cap space). Encarnacion, Bautista, and legroom could each carry this team on any given week. When added to the upside of Vogt, Baez, Tomas, and Iglesias, this team is in good shape.
Minnesota Twins: The Twinkies lie right in the middle of these 2 teams in my opinion. The offense looks very powerful, especially if their GM successfully utilizes the great platoons of certain players. Even if they don't, this team has enough power to lead the league in HR on any given week. The rotation is more of a question so far but many FAs lie available still. The relief core looks quite nice in terms of K%, especially with Capps and Harris. However, using 29.4M of their cap on RP (so far) seems a bit high in my eyes. The offense can likely carry this team though in a 32 team league.
Boston Red Sox: No Players on roster. (Disclaimer: Boston just went under new ownership)
Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles went with a familiar face in Matt Wieters, even if he doesn't return to Baltimore for real. No other big moves have been made though, as Matt is the only man under contract so far.
Oakland A's: Also with 1 man under contract, the A's went after Brandon Crawford, signing him for 5yrs/33.75M, a contract that I look back on now as a potential steal.
My Team: Royals Moves So far
The Royals have been a busy team in FA so far, even if they haven't come through with any agreed upon contracts. A lot of bids have been made, but mostly early on in auctions, trying to get some guys cheap before others realize the players are worth more. A few signings have been made though, and the Kansas City faithful are very excited about these so far.
Logan Morrison 1B SEA 3yrs/9.75M: LoMo had a below average year in Seattle last year, but the Royals feel they can better utilize his notable platoon splits to make him an effective CI.
Mike Napoli 1B TEX 3yrs/10.8M: Napoli may be in the back side of his career, but can still be successful. Moving to hitter-friendly Arlington may help as well.
David DeJesus OF 1yr/200k: DeJesus is happy to leave the Trop, heading to a contender in the Angels
Devon Travis 2B TOR 5yr/35M: The Blue Jays missed their early season breakout in the playoffs. They'll be glad to have him back and see what he can do in a full season, as will these Royals.
Minors Draft
The Minors draft has started slow so far, with most players taken about where expected. A run of 4 pitchers at picks 3-6 may have been a surprise though. With so many great minor leaguers available, the Minors Draft will be fun to watch
