This is how the rule for DFA is currently written, it is basically a mechanism to take care of removing a player from the 40 man roster to create a space for a new player to be added, it does not however provide a way for owners to get salary cap relief. I would like to run a poll to see how everyone feels about altering this rule. Please vote on one of the following
1, Current DFA Rule
GMs can designate players for assignment. When a team DFAs a player, that player is immediately removed from the roster and their slot is available. Other teams may claim the DFA'ed player.
Players remain DFA'ed for 10 days. If not claimed, they are moved off 40-man and considered a paid minor leaguer. DFA'ed players are still usable later on if one chooses to promote them back to the 40-man.
2. New DFA Rule - option 1
GMs can designate players for assignment. When a team DFAs a player, that player is immediately removed from the roster and their slot is available. Other teams may claim the DFA'ed player.
Players remain DFA'ed for 10 days. AFTER WHICH if not claimed THE OWNER MUST EITHER a) RELEASE PLAYER or b) OUTRIGHT THE PLAYER FROM THE 40-MAN ROSTER TO PAID MINORS. DFA'ed players are still usable later on if one chooses to promote them back to the 40-man.
3. New DFA Rule - option 2
GMs can designate players for assignment. When a team DFAs a player, that player is immediately removed from the roster and their slot is available. Other teams may claim the DFA'ed player.
Players remain DFA'ed for 10 days. AFTER WHICH if not claimed THE OWNER MUST EITHER a) RELEASE PLAYER WITH 50% SALARY CAP HIT or b) OUTRIGHT THE PLAYER FROM THE 40-MAN ROSTER TO PAID MINORS. DFA'ed players are still usable later on if one chooses to promote them back to the 40-man.
