Three different options may be used on player contracts. Each affects how and when the player is released, as well as influences the value of the contract when being considered in free agent bidding.
Team Option
Team options allow GMs the opportunity to retain a player one additional year on their current contract. If a player has a team option, it will denoted as 2016-2017T, indicating the contract expires in 2016 but the team option may be executed to keep the player through 2017.
Player Option
Player options are outside the control of the GM and are dependent on the player's tier and salary. For each position and tier, there is a minimum salary that players expect to earn for their performance. If the player's current contract matches or exceeds that amount, then they will choose to exercise the player option. Otherwise, they will turn down the contract. We will rank each position (DH included with OF) based on salary, if the player out-performs his contract rank, he will decline the option. If the player ties or under-performers compared to contract rank, he will accept the option. Player rank will be determined by ESPN Player Rater for our league. Contract ranking will be determined by bid points and the free agent calculator. Players will count towards the position they played the most at during the previous season.
Mutual Option
Mutual options are treated as player options initially. If the player declines the player option, then the GM has the opportunity to exercise the team option. If neither the player nor the team option are accepted, then the player is released.
