Free Agency Calculator
This league will use a free agency calculator to determine bid points for a free agent contract. The calculator will be based on whether the contract is a major league or paid minor league contract, number of years, annual salary, and type of option. GMs are required to use the calculator to ensure bid points are calculated correctly. The highest bid points offered, signs the respective player to the given deal.
In-Season Free Agency
During the regular season, any player not on a Saber Dynasty roster who meets one or both of the following two conditions may be posted as a free-agent:
(1) has exceeded rookie requirements (130 AB / 50 IP)
or
(2) is currently on a major league roster.
Obviously, free agents cannot already be owned.
To post a free agent, GMs should post in the "In-Season Free Agency" Thread. The subject's post will include the player's name and position. The post should then include information from the free agency calculator spreadsheet. GMs may copy from the spreadsheet or manually type the following information:
(1) Player Name
(2) Position
(3) Contract Terms (years, salary, option)
(4) Total Bid Points
GMs will be limited to posting two free agents per calendar month during the regular season. This restriction may be ignored by any team that does not currently meet roster minimum requirement of 20 active players.
Free agents will be awarded to a team when the prevailing bid has stood for 48 hours.
Offseason Free Agency
The qualifying offer round of free agency will begin on January 1st and will be for GMs to post those players to which they are offering qualifying offers.
Normal free agency will begin on January 8th. Offseason free agency will consist of four rounds, during which each GM will be allowed to post one player per round. Each subsequent round after the 1st will begin a week after the previous round. For example, the 2016 off-season free agency will be scheduled as such:
Qualifying round begins - January 1st (posting players ends January 7th at midnight)
1st round begins - January 8th (posting players ends January 14th)
2nd round begins - January 15th (posting players ends January 21st)
3rd round begins - January 22nd (posting players ends January 28th)
4th round begins - January 29th (No limit for posting players)
Free agents will be awarded to a team when the prevailing bid has stood for 48 hours.
Free Agency Compensation
Free Agency Compensation will occur under the following circumstances:
(1) The free agent has been with the team since April 1st or earlier
(2) The GM offered the free agent a qualifying offer, which is at least a 1-year contract for the average salary of the 125-highest paid players in SD or higher. The qualifying offer salary amount will be determined based off contracts on April 1st of the previous year.
(3) Another team signs the player
Qualifying Offer
There will be a Qualifying Offer round of free agency that will be conducted prior to open free agency. GMs who wish to tender a player a qualifying offer will be allowed to post those players, with their 1 year qualifying offer, during this time. When posting, to be sure all owners are aware, the subject line of the post should include Player Name, Position, Qualifying Offer (Ex: Curtis Granderson, OF, Qualifying Offer) As noted above, the qualifying offer amount will be pre-determined, based on the 125 highest average salary contracts in Saber Dynasty.
Guidelines for team losing the free agent:
- Receives a compensatory pick between the 1st and 2nd round of the amateur draft.
- The order of the compensation picks will be determined by ESPN's Player Rater
Guidelines for team signing a free agent who was tendered a qualifying offer:
- The club signing the player loses its first-round pick in the amateur draft, unless that pick is among the top 10, in which case the signing club loses its next-highest pick.
- Teams will only be allowed to forfeit 1st or 2nd round picks. So, teams that do not have a pick in the first two rounds will not be allowed to offer contracts to players with qualifying offers.
Minor League Free Agent Signings
Minor league contracts work just like major league contracts with the following differences:
-You can sign a player to a minor league contract instead of counting him towards your 25 or 40 man rosters. He is instead considered a "paid minor leaguer". Note that the contracts that you give these players WILL count against your salary cap and are guaranteed. To keep owners from hoarding players on minor league contracts, if the player is not on a team's 40 man roster than they are eligible for the Rule 5 draft.
- Minor league contracts can only be given to players that do not qualify as prospects (in their career history they have more than 50 IP or more than 130 ABs)
- The minimum contract amount for a minor league deal is $200k (not the usual $400k)
-If a player on a minor league deal is promoted to the 25-man roster and his minor league contract is less than 400k, the contract is changed to a major league contract and thus his salary is raised to the league minimum (400k).
